Maritime Taiwan: Historical Encounters with the East and the West - Shih-Shan Henry Tsai This looks like a very well written book. It deals with the early history of Taiwan, from the arrival of the duth in 1648, up to the post-war period -- and attempts to show, which is true, that Taiwan was always part of a broad maritime structure of international players (Dutch, Japanese, Chinese, U.S.), and was never really a "part of China" in the way the media thinks of it.
